How We Work
Providing genuine listening support for You

Process Overview
A Little More Detail
To engage in our service the first step is to feel that you need someone to talk to about coping with the stresses and challenges that life is bringing to you.
Whether you are referred by a GP or have decided to self-refer to the NHS mental wellbeing service, we can help you fill the gap between making the decision and the call and actually starting with the appropriate therapy.
We are not qualified therapists ourselves, so we don’t offer any therapies. However, we use a coaching style – some of us have qualifications in this area – to help you manage your mental wellbeing while you are waiting for your first therapy appointment.
Our aim in offering this service is to reduce any further decline while you are waiting for counselling or other professional help.
Step 1
The Phoenix Rising Support Service has a defined path that our clients follow. The first step is the hardest. It can only be taken when you decide the time is right for you to seek help.
Think carefully about whether you are ready. You will know the time is right when you feel there is nowhere else to turn, you feel awkward with family and friends who have been supportive because of the frequency of conversations about the same thing – quite possibly accompanied by tearful episodes.
There is nothing wrong with a tearful episode – it is natural and healthy. When you are ready, you will find the courage to pick up your phone and ring, text or email us to arrange a free consultation.
Step 2
To engage in our service the next step is to contact us. When you feel that you need someone to talk to about coping with the stresses and challenges that life is bringing to you – we are here to help.
If you have not already done so, we will talk to you about self-referring to a professional counselling service and listen to any concerns you might have about doing so.
Step 3
Whether you are referred by a GP or have decided to self-refer to the NHS mental wellbeing service, we can help you fill the gap between making the call and actually starting with the appropriate therapy.
Step 4
Once you embark on your series of sessions with a professional therapist, we step back from the arena (except for exceptional circumstances, which will be agreed at the outset of your time with us).
This is to enable you to fully immerse yourself in the work you will be taking on with your therapist and avoid any duplication of conversations or overwhelm of commitments.
We recommend that you be honest with yourself and your therapist about your progress. Only by doing so will you get the most from the experience.
Step 5
After your final session with your therapist, you are welcome to return to our “listening ears” at any point. We do not judge – after all, the reason we exist is because we have been there and know just how valuable it can be to have someone to take a sense check with and keep spirits (and motivation) up.
You may not want the same level of frequency as you did before your therapy sessions, and this is OK. We provide what is needed, when it is needed. Quite simply – you are in the driving seat.
