Providing genuine listening support for You

Phoenix Rising is a support service run by people who care about our nation’s mental well-being.  We do not provide counselling: what we do provide is Mental Health First Aid. This comes in the form of someone who is experienced in handling a life changing situation, has experience of supporting the challenges of life’s journey and understands the highs and lows of emotion that come along with that journey.

The aim is to provide “wrap-around” support for the therapies that are offered under mental health provision.  In essence, we are a first aid service for mental health and wellbeing.

We are someone to talk to, who will listen and encourage; a regular commitment from someone who understands and will not judge; someone who has no other agenda than to allow you to let go of your emotions and talk it through, rather than “try to fix it”.

We live in a society that has high expectations of us. Most of us handle those demands well, simply taking them in our stride – or by finding a healthy way to blow out those cobwebs. However, sometimes we are challenged with more than we feel we can handle all at once. At these times it is natural to feel overwhelmed and for many this can have a negative impact.

AIMS

  • To provide “wrap-around” support for therapies that are offered under mental health provision.
  • To support family and friends of anyone with a mental health condition
  • To provide support prior to NHS or other professional intervention (treatment)
  • To raise awareness of mental health conditions
  • To remove stigma surrounding mental health conditions
  • To provide the right support, at the right time, for people needing respite from their daily fears, anxieties and negative thoughts.

Mission & Vision

Mission

To be the best first aid service for mental health and wellbeing in the East Midlands for anyone requiring help around mental health conditions prior to or after NHS and professional treatments.

Vision

Our Vision is for first aid support to be globally available to anyone requiring it – without stigma and with social acceptance, awareness of conditions and the impact on quality of life.

We want to be part of a world where everyone has access to mental well-being first aid at point of need and where the support provided is tailored to individual needs, circumstances and is fit for purpose.

Our Core Values

  • Compassion:  rooted in empathy, kindness, and understanding towards individuals experiencing mental health challenges.
  • Respect:  the privacy, dignity, and autonomy of the individuals seeking help.
  • Non-judgmental attitude:   provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals feel free to express themselves without fear of being judged.
  • Confidentiality:   maintain the confidentiality of the individuals seeking help, except in situations where there is a risk of harm to themselves or others.
  • Inclusivity:  be inclusive of all individuals, regardless of their background, ethnicity, culture, gender, or sexual orientation.
  • Professionalism:  adhere to the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct.
Overall, our mental health first aid service prioritises providing a safe, non-judgmental, and compassionate space for individuals to seek help and support for their mental health challenges.

Background

The NHS is ploughing billions (£15.5bn in 2022/23 to be precise) into Mental Health support services. The awareness of the importance of mental well-being is being seen as of increasing importance in the medical services field.

However, with at least a quarter of the population needing some form of mental well-being support at any one time (according to Mind, official statistics state that 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year), the NHS services and budgets are unable to cope with demand. It is prudent to assume that this pattern will continue for the foreseeable future. There are at least two reasons for this:

  1. As the population grows, service provision is unable to meet demand; and
  2. This statistic has remained unchanged for decades, despite the efforts of the NHS to increase provision

This isn’t a criticism of the NHS provision – on the contrary, it is a realistic view of the situation facing service providers and NHS budgets.

Phoenix Rising recognises the predicament and aims to alleviate the suffering of as many people as possible.

We are currently a very small provision – a drop in the ocean in fact. However, every additional provision makes a difference for someone.

The “service” is not a traditional counselling service – in fact, for counselling we would encourage you to seek the support of the NHS or private professionals.

Our service is intended for anyone who has recently self-referred, or been referred by a professional, to one of the many therapies available in today’s market.

We don’t provide any form of therapy, if we, or you, feel therapy is required we can be a source of information about where to find professional help.
